Mizzou IT: E-Mail
E-Mail Client ProgramsAlthough Webmail is the preferred e-mail access method for students, there are other options available for students who don't want to use Webmail. E-mail client programs are installed on your own computer and don't require a web browser, but they do require an Internet connection.Outlook ExpressRecommended use: off-campus for students who do not want to use WebmailAvailable on: Windows Outlook Express comes pre-installed on most Windows computers. It is not quite as full-featured as Outlook (see below). You can configure Outlook Express to either leave your messages on the mail server (IMAP) or download them to your computer (POP). POP is not recommended, because messages downloaded to your local machine cannot be accessed from elsewhere. OutlookRecommended use: on-campus onlyAvailable on: Windows Outlook has sharable full-featured calendaring, a task list, a contacts database, mail filters and more. It can be used off-campus, but it is not recommended. Use of Outlook outside of Mizzou Tigernet requires Virtual Private Networking. EntourageRecommended use: on-campus onlyAvailable on: Macintosh Entourage integrates e-mail, calendar and address book synchronization, directory service and more. It can be used off-campus, but it is not recommended. Use of Entourage X outside of Mizzou Tigernet requires Virtual Private Networking and is not recommended. ThunderbirdRecommended use: on- or off-campusAvailable on: Macintosh, Windows, Linux Thunderbird is free from mozilla.org and features enhancements to help you manage your inbox and stay informed. Thunderbird lets you organize and display your folders, whether by favorites, recently viewed or folders containing unread messages. You can also set up RSS and newsgroup folders to stay on top of news and your interests. Mac MailRecommended use: on- or off-campusAvailable on: Macintosh Mac Mail is the Macintosh e-mail client pre-installed with OSX. |
